HOW TO TELL IF YOU NEED A SLEEP EVALUATION Referrals to a sleep center are made for the following problems:- Insomnia of more than three months duration; - Excessive and inappropriate daytime sleepiness; - Heavy snoring; - Bed partner's observations of abnormal or irregular breathing patterns during sleep; - Poor quality of nighttime sleep in patients with heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, hypertension, and neurological disorders that affect the muscles; - Obese patients; - Recurrent and abnormal episodic events during sleep, such as sleepwalking, nightmares and nocturnal seizures THE SLEEP STUDY As a patient referred to the St. Petersburg Sleep Disorders Center, your first evaluation will include a full medical history and physical examination. Next, you'll be scheduled for a sleep study. This involves staying overnight in a comfotable, private room, while multiple sensors continuously monitor your brain waves, eye movement, air exchange, heartbeat, breathing effort, muscle activity, and oxygen levels. The information obtained from the sleep study may help lead to an appropriate diagnosis and treatment. |
